Step-by-Step Guide to becoming a Santa Monica Police Officer
Becoming a police officer requires integrity, dedication, and a commitment to service. That’s why SMPD approaches hiring with care and professionalism. Our process is thorough, transparent, and designed to support qualified applicants every step of the way, because the responsibility of protecting our city starts with how we select those who serve.
Lateral Officers begin at step 4
Submit Your Application
All applicants must complete a City application and provide clear, complete details about their qualifications. Candidates whose experience best matches the City’s needs will be invited to participate in the next phase of the selection process.
National Testing Network (NTN) exam
All applicants must complete the NTN exam (virtual or in-person). Prior scores from the past year may be used, but an online application is still required. After applying, you’ll receive testing instructions. Visit the National Testing Network to schedule.
Show Us Your Strength
Or “Fit to Serve”
This exam consists of four timed exercises that measure strength and endurance: sit-ups, push-ups, a “dummy” drag, and a 1.5-mile run. To assist with PFQ preparation, applicants are encouraged to download the scoresheet using the link below.
Interview with Our Team
A panel of SMPD personnel will assess your communication, decision-making, and understanding of law enforcement. Be prepared to discuss your background, motivations, and interest in SMPD. For lateral officers, this is the next step after applying.
Know the Whole You
The background check ensures you meet SMPD’s high standards for integrity and professionalism. It includes a full review of criminal, driving, credit, military, and work history, plus reference checks to assess your suitability for law enforcement.
Integrity Matters
A polygraph (lie detector) examination is conducted to verify the information provided during your background investigation. The polygraph helps confirm honesty, accountability, and alignment with SMPD’s standards of truthfulness
Meet the Chief
Applicants who pass prior stages are invited to a final interview with the Chief of Police. Use this time to share your story, motivation to serve, and alignment with SMPD’s mission.
If successful, the Chief will extend you a conditional job offer.
Fitness for Duty
These POST-mandated evaluations confirm you are physically and psychologically fit for duty. Exams are conducted by licensed professionals and assess your readiness to perform the essential functions of a police officer.
Begin Training
Once hired, recruits attend a POST-certified police academy for six months of intensive training. You’ll be paid throughout and receive hands-on instruction in law, tactics, fitness, and community policing.
Lateral officers skip the academy and proceed directly into SMPD’s Field Training Program.
Testing Dates
