Endless Opportunities for Growth

Beyond patrol and specialty assignments, a comprehensive promotional track continues your development with the Santa Monica PD. It begins with the rank of Sergeant, progresses to Lieutenant, and continues into executive roles as Captain and Deputy Chief. With each promotion, you will gain the tools, training, and trust to lead teams, shape strategy, and drive the department forward. Every step is earned, supported by mentorship and experience.

Investigate and Solve Crimes

Detectives lead complex investigations across a range of crimes, from theft and assault to fraud and homicide. Through evidence collection, interviews, and case analysis, they build strong cases that drive justice and protect the community.

Focused Crime Suppression

CIT officers take a proactive approach to stopping chronic offenders and addressing problem areas. They work undercover, conduct surveillance, and support major cases throughout the city.

Partner With a Four-Legged Hero

K9 handlers form an unbreakable bond with their partners, who are trained in narcotics detection, building searches, and high-risk apprehension to protect officers, find threats, and support critical missions.

Elite Tactical Response

The SWAT team responds to high-risk incidents including barricades, warrant service, and armed threats. Officers receive intensive training in tactics, weapons, and crisis response.

Eyes in the Sky

UAS Operators use drones for search and rescue, tactical operations, and aerial surveillance. Precision flying and real-time data enhance safety for officers and the public.

Downtown Safety & Support

DSU officers specialize in downtown coverage, including bicycle patrol, business engagement, and crime prevention. They balance active enforcement with meaningful community connection.

Mentor the Next Generation

FTOs guide new officers after the academy, leading them through real-world scenarios, refining their skills, and building a foundation of professionalism, accountability, and ethical service.

Communication Saves Lives

CNT officers respond to hostage, barricade, and mental health crisis calls. Through skilled negotiation and de-escalation, they help resolve high-risk situations and support SWAT during critical incidents.

Pier & Beach Enforcement

DaRT officers work to ensure public safety and quality of life along the beach and pier. Officers engage with visitors, address ongoing problems, and respond rapidly to high-visibility areas.

Tack and Saddle

The Mounted Unit patrols on horseback at events, at the pier, and in parks. Their elevated presence provides crowd control, public engagement, and offers a distinct, community-focused approach to policing.

Protect and Mentor Youth

SROs serve on school campuses to build strong relationships with students and staff, promote safety, and act as mentors, educators, and trusted role models within the learning environment.

Keep Roads Safe & Moving

Traffic officers enforce vehicle laws, respond to crashes, manage major events, and provide VIP escorts. Trained in advanced motorcycle tactics, they keep roadways safe, visible, and moving throughout Santa Monica.

Community-First Policing

NROs work closely with residents and businesses to address long-term issues, build trust, and promote safety through community outreach and problem-solving strategies.

Build the Future of SMPD

Background Investigators help shape the department by identifying qualified candidates through interviews, records checks, and detailed reports. Their work ensures SMPD hires with integrity, accountability, and high professional standards.

Support and Engagement

HLP officers build relationships with unhoused individuals and connect them with services, while addressing public safety concerns. They work closely with outreach teams and community partners.

Expert Crash Investigations

MART investigates serious and fatal collisions with precision and care. A dedicated team of sworn and civilian staff collects evidence, analyzes crash data, and delivers accurate reports that support accountability and informed decision-making.
