Sworn Hiring Process

How to Become a Police Officer

Our hiring process is transparent, structured, and designed to set you up for success. From application to academy, we are with you every step of the way. Lateral officers follow an expedited version of this path.

Apply Online

Submit your application via an online portal and begin your journey with SMPD.

National Testing Network (NTN) Written Examination

Complete the NTN exam or transfer a valid score. Online and Secure. 

Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ)

Timed push ups, situps, 1.5 mile run, and a 165 lb dummy drag

Oral Interview

Meet with department representatives to assess your fit and motivation.
(Lateral officers start here)

Background Investigation

A thorough review of your personal, professional, and criminal history.

Polygraph Examination

Evaluates honesty and integrity.

Interview with Chief of Police

Meet with the Chief of Police. If successful, the Chief will extend you a conditional job offer.

Psychological & Medical Examinations

Ensure you are mentally and physically fit to serve the community.

Start the Academy

Get paid while you attend the 22 week POST certified police academy.(Laterals go straight to Field Training)
